Forever a popular period drama setting, the Georgian era is regularly portrayed on our screens, entertaining us with galloping horses, classical country houses and divine costumes. With the recent hit-series Bridgerton now crowned as Netflix’s most watched TV drama to date, it is clear that our love-affair with the Georgian era is far from over.

Georgian buildings, particularly country houses, regularly play a crucial role in evoking the character of the times: just think of Mr Darcy’s ‘Pemberley’ in the BBC’s adaption of Pride and Prejudice (1995). The beautifully landscaped gardens of Stowe and Stourhead are equally popular locations, as are the distinctive honey-coloured streets of Bath and Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College. In this talk, Dr Amy Boyington will explore the real-life locations from some of the most famous dramas and films, including Bridgerton (2020), Outlander (2014-), Poldark (2015-19), The Duchess (2008), Emma (2020), Belle (2013) and Barry Lyndon (1975).

Dr Amy Boyington is an architectural historian and research consultant. She is a trustee of the Georgian Group and the Chair of the Young Georgians. In 2018 she completed her doctorate at Cambridge University in which she investigated female architectural patronage in eighteenth-century Britain. She is now writing a book on this subject. After completing a postdoctoral research position at Queens’ College, Cambridge, Amy went on to work as a research consultant for the National Trust at Stowe Landscape Gardens and for Historic Royal Palaces at Kensington Palace. She has previously worked in a curatorial capacity at Woburn Abbey, Holkham Hall and Goodwood House.

The talks starts at 6.30pm. Joining details will be sent to attendees the day before.
